Eagle Scout leads renovation of Belmar Park’s western dock
All in a weekend’s work, Eagle Scout Kurt Fedorczyk, his father, John and fellow Eagle Scouts of Troop 342, orchestrated a remarkable transformation at Belmar Park’s western dock on Kountze Lake. Their team dedicated their entire weekend, working two, eight-hour days to replace weathered wood on the deck and rails with composite deck material.
Fedorczyk and his team collaborated with a pair of Lakewood city staff - parks supervisor, Bill Clark and parks maintenance lead, Shelley McFarland - to organize the project which had been in the works since late–January.
Clark commended the Eagle Scout for taking charge of the project by fundraising the money for the deck materials and even putting together a detailed plan for the renovation.
“For this group to come in here from planning to execution, it was really huge,” Clark said.
City staff had previously replaced two decks on the north side of the lake, and with the scout project, the third dock on the west side has been completed. Clark said the summer months are an especially busy time for parks staff and Belmar Park is an area that requires regular attention because it is one of the most visited parks in Lakewood.
Clark expressed deep gratitude for the invaluable assistance provided by Kurt and his troop while recognizing the significant impact volunteer work has on the city.
“It is just amazing the amount of community drive and desire there has been,” Clark said. “I want to personally thank Kurt’s team and the rest of our volunteers that are coming out here out of the goodness of their hearts. I really can’t say enough thanks.”
