City of Lakewood staff met with the City and Couty of Denver to better understand the migrant crisis, its impacts and the needs as well as possible options for Lakewood to work with Denver on this crisis in the spirit of “being a good neighbor.” The following requests came from the meeting.

Denver has requested the City of Lakewood’s assistance in referring interested parties to the City and County of Denver website.   

Request #2 
Denver invites community members throughout the metro area to participate in volunteer and donation opportunities that can help migrant newcomers.  


  • Denver’s Office of Immigrant & Refugee Affairs (DOIRA) offers a variety of resources and support for migrants entering the Denver metro community and organizations that would like to get involved. Resources include:

  • 2-1-1 Colorado provides a variety of immigrant, refugee and new American resources and support. Those looking for information can call 2-1-1 or text 898-211 to reach the 211 Colorado Help Center and speak with a live navigator. Spanish-speaking navigators are available and can provide free translation services as well as direct services for free transportation through Lyft rides and much more.   • The Colorado Office of New Americans (ONA) serves as the point of contact for state agencies, private sector organizations, and the public to advance the integration and inclusion of New Americans in Colorado communities. More information is available at https://ona.colorado.gov/

Get Involved

In addition to exploring the above resources, individuals who would like to get involved to help migrants entering our community can: 

  • Make a financial contribution to the Newcomers Fund to help the City of Denver’s nonprofit partners who are supporting migrants with resource navigation, work authorization, shelter and other services. 
  • Donate the most needed items (including men’s clothing, children’s clothing, shoes, winter gear, underwear).  
  • Volunteer to support the migrant response. Most-needed volunteer skills are bilingual speaking skills, coordination skills, case management skills, education/training skills, etc. 
  • Donating support to Lakewood faith-based organizations who currently provide resources to the newcomer migrant population. 
  • Donating support to Lakewood non-profit organizations also being impacted by the newcomer migrant population.
