Porter Park Master plan
The Porter Farm property, located at 731 Tabor St., is a 7.7-acre parcel acquired in 2021 by the City to provide much needed park space in Ward 1.
To honor the legacy of the family, the park is named after Daniel Wilson Porter and Phyllis Porter. A resident of Lakewood for over 70 years, Daniel Porter served on the boards of High View Water District and Golden Canal and Reservoir Company. He was a scoutmaster, election judge, and a Kiwanis member and church volunteer for most of his life. Phyllis was also dedicated to her community. She was an Alameda High School math teacher, a Scout Leader for 12 years, active member of League of Women Voters, election judge, census taker, and for many years a volunteer at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.
Daniel and Phyllis had a love for farming and preservation; Daniel became a Master Gardener late in life. The Porter family desires the city to carry-on the farming tradition on the property with a farming element to the future park that would serve the Lakewood community.
Demolition of the structures on the site are set to occur in early 2023, followed by a public engagement process to determine neighborhood desired park amenities, including an urban farming component, late this year.
The development of the site is initially funded in the five-year Capital Improvement Plan budget for 2023. View the master plan for Porter Park when you visit Lakewoodtogether.org/PorterParkProject.
Tree Mitigation
Following an assessment of tree health and safety, the City Forester will contract removal of several trees on site. Remaining trees will be included in the city tree canopy maintenance program. Additional trees will be added with future park development, currently scheduled for 2023, and as a result of the community engagement process.
