July 2, 2025 –The Colorado Lottery announced that voting is now open for the 2025 People’s Choice Award, highlighting the best outdoor projects funded by the Colorado Lottery. The City of Lakewood’s Bear Creek Trail improvement project, a seven-mile regional trail and soft-surface parallel trail connecting the west metro area from C-470 to Denver, is one of 14 projects in the state to receive the 2025 Colorado Lottery Starburst Award and is now eligible to win the People Choice Award. Voting opens Tuesday, July 1 and closes on July 31. Vote today at LakewoodTogether.org/BearCreekTrail for a chance to win a prize package from the Colorado Lottery!

The Bear Creek Trail project is an exemplary project showcasing the balance between environmental stewardship and recreation in the great outdoors. Located in Lakewood’s Bear Creek Greenbelt, the improvements included a new multi-use trail, soft-surface parallel trail, and bridge replacements along with new restroom facilities. The project promotes recreational inclusivity, increases safety, and supports wellness opportunities for all modes of travel for visitors to the popular trail. The Bear Creek Trail’s unique design reflects the community's needs and desires, offering a place for residents and visitors to come together, enjoy nature, and recreate safely. The project would not have been possible without essential partnerships with the Colorado Lottery,  Jefferson County Open Space, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

The Colorado Lottery Starburst Award recognizes excellence in the use of Lottery funds for community and conservation projects. The award highlights outstanding projects that have been funded through Lottery proceeds, showcasing the positive impact these projects have on communities across the state. Lottery proceeds are distributed through grants via Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO), through Lakewood’s attributable share, and other community organizations, fostering the development of a variety of projects around Colorado.
