  1. Previous Speed Limit Law
    Before this new policy, the speed limit was 30 mph on residential roads unless otherwise posted.
  2. Problems identified
    Lakewood staff and community members identified persistent speed and safety challenges on residential streets.
  3. Traffic Calming Measures Implemented
    The city implemented traffic calming strategies to slow speeds in key areas.
  4. Speed Reduction Study
    The Lakewood Advisory Commission conducted a speed reduction study and provided recommendations to City Council.
  5. Community Engagement
    The city conducted a survey asking community members what the residential speed limit should be in Lakewood.
  6. LAC and Staff Recommendations
    The LAC and Lakewood staff presented their recommendations to reduce residential speed limits to either 25 or 20 mph.
  7. New Limit Set at 20 mph
    Lakewood City Council established the new residential speed limit as 20 mph unless otherwise posted.
  8. New Signs and Outreach
    New speed limit signs were created and installed throughout the city. Continued public outreach will keep our community informed.
  9. Additional Traffic Calming
    Additional traffic calming tools are being developed and implemented in the future.
