About Internship Positions

The City of Lakewood welcomes students who pride themselves for their hard work and ability to problem solve and multi-task. We are looking for positive mindsets and the ability to adapt. In this role, you will research and evaluate new ideas and cutting-edge initiative for potential use in the department. We are looking for hard working and dedicated students who want work experience. We are looking for candidates with the following:

  • Currently enrolled and/or completing their undergraduate or masters
  • High school diploma or equivalent and some college course-level coursework in business or related field required
  • Interested in business and finance
  • Proficient in using Microsoft and its partnered apps such as Excel, Outlook and Teams
  • Clear and precise written and verbal communications
  • Team player
  • Take initiative in always wanting to do and be better
  • Experience in taking on open ended tasks

Internship Opportunities

The positions needed are to help the wonderful team here at the revenue department of Lakewood with new divisions. This paid internship will allow students to not only gain critical and applicable skills towards their future degrees, but they will also cater to the success and growth of the City of Lakewood. Our mission statement is to provide a responsive fiscal and asset management foundation to meet the needs of the community through professional, knowledgeable and ethical services.

Under the general supervision of the revenue supervisor, interns will be responsible for providing customer service to those doing business in the city and assisting the audit staff.

Essential Tasks:

  • Performs communication outreach to businesses that may be selling into Lakewood, whether local or remote sellers and pursues licensing.
  • Reviews license applications for completeness.
  • Confers with taxpayers and the general public in person, through telephone contact, and in writing; provides information on tax laws, procedures and liabilities.
  • Audits employee purchases on city-issued credit cards.
  • Assists auditors with the review of audit documents.
  • Assists with the integration of the State of Colorado’s central tax remittance system (SUTS).
  • Reviews requests for tax refunds; processes refunds.
  • Tests addresses to determine applicable municipal tax. 
  • Reports on metrics as requested by the U.S. Census.
  • Interacts with others in a positive manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
