The City of Lakewood obtained ownership of a 10-acre property in the Tamarisk Subdivision (Tract G), located at 3100 S. Indiana St., for municipal uses in 1998. At the time, the dedication indicated the site could be transferred to Jefferson County School District for school purposes, with the restriction that if the district did not construct a school building on site within fifteen years, the property would revert to the city to decide how to use the site.  The city never transferred the site and the district indicated they do not have a need for this tract of land.
The Department of Community Resources and Lakewood residents requested City Council afford this land the open space and park protections of the City Charter in 2020. Article 14 of the City Charter sets forth parameters for the sale, lease and disposal of city property.  It states that the City Council may only lease, sell, or otherwise dispose of real property used or held for open space or park purposes by a vote of the people of the city at a special or regular municipal election.
Council adopted a resolution declaring the Tamarisk property an open space or park property of the City of Lakewood in September of 2020. There are no specific plans at this time to make improvements to the new park space.  The city currently maintains the property and will continue to do so.
