Arts Outreach Experiences

The City of Lakewood’s outreach program provides educational workshops to support the visual and performing arts. Custom-designed workshops are offered to school and community groups of all levels to enhance thematic subjects, academic studies and content standards. Cultural Experiences

Milagros (Mexico)

This Mexican art form, typically passed down through the generations, originated in colonial times and produce sculptures, ornaments and frames. Brightly colored and embossed, works can range from animal shapes, to hearts, to picture frames.

Dia de los Muertos (Mexico)

A two-day holiday that reunites the living and the dead, rich in history and different ways to celebrate. ofrendas (offerings), calaveras (skulls), flor de muerto (flower of the dead) and papel picado (paper piercing) are some of the traditions observed to celebrate those who have passed.

Gyotaku (Japan)

A traditional Japanese method of printing fish to record the size and species of fish caught for display at market. The traditional method is to print in sumi ink so that the fish can be later washed and consumed. Many artists now use water soluble acrylic paint and other mediums.

Shibori (Japan)

The traditional Japanese craft of resist-dyeing. Patterns can be elaborate due to the different techniques of winding, binding, and cinching of the fabric. Its most significant feature is the indigo dye used in this method.

Printmaking

Linocut Technique

A printmaking technique where a sheet of linoleum, styrofoam or wooden block (material used is based on age) is carved to create a relief surface. The surface is then inked and impressed on to paper or fabric by hand or with a press.
