What began as a typical day at Carmody Recreation Center became a lifesaving moment that showcased the courage, skill. and heart of Lakewood’s lifeguards.
At around 7 a.m. on the morning of July 25, a swimmer lost consciousness in the pool. Within seconds, staff rushed into action. Lifeguards Terrence (TJ) Micciche-Hall, Claire Tompkins, and Ian Jenner, and a fellow patron, pulled the swimmer from the water, administered CPR and used an automated external defibrillator (AED) to deliver a lifesaving shock that restarted the patron’s heart. Meanwhile, lifeguard Gabrielle Orizaba coordinated the emergency response, staying in constant radio contact with her teammates and guiding West Metro Fire crews to the pool deck.
When members of West Metro Fire Company 8 arrived, they continued patient care and transported the swimmer to the hospital. By the time firefighters left, the patient was awake, sitting up and talking — a remarkable outcome made possible by the lifeguards’ swift response, strong training, and teamwork.
In recognition of their heroic actions, Ian, TJ, Claire, and Gabrielle have been awarded the West Metro Fire Citizen Award. The award was presented at the West Metro Fire Protection District Board of Directors meeting on Tuesday Sept. 23.
West Metro Fire officials returned after the incident to personally commend the staff for their outstanding response before first responders arrived. Their professionalism and dedication represent the very best of Lakewood.
Please join us in congratulating these incredible lifeguards for their courage and composure under pressure. Their actions not only saved a life, but also reflect the values of care, service, and community that make Lakewood a special place to call home.
