The City of Lakewood partners with Volunteers of America (VOA), providing a meal program at the Clements Community Center for those 60+. The Volunteer positions are available in the kitchen, dining area, or reception/check-in. Responsibilities, based on the different positions, generally involve set-up, plating and serving food to patrons, welcome and check-in of diners. Volunteers are not required to cook, as the food is prepared by VOA. Meals are served Monday through Thursday, holidays excluded.

The volunteer will be working in cooperation with other volunteers, participants and City of Lakewood staff members. The dining room is busy and noisy at times, but fun! Training provided by the VAR Program Specialist-Congregate Meal Site and designees. Background check is required for all positions.

Volunteers serve lunch.

Kitchen & Dining Area Position

Volunteer Purpose

To assist in providing a meal to those 60+ through plating and serving the meal.

Responsibilities

Kitchen volunteers are responsible for kitchen area set-up, plating food, and clean-up. Dining area volunteers are responsible for set-up of dining area, serving meal to  patrons, and clean-up. Volunteers are not required to cook.

Qualifications

Most positions will require you to be able to stand for the length of your shift with breaks when you need it. Volunteer must be able to positively interact with participants, the public, other volunteers and staff. Must have the ability to communicate effectively, and bring a spirit of inclusiveness and fun to our programs.  

Age Requirement 

Minimum age is 18.

Schedule

The meal program provides meals Monday through Thursday.  Volunteer shifts typically vary between 2 and 3 hours. There is availability for 4 hour shifts if desired.  Shifts are between the hours of 9:00am and 1:00pm.  All shifts are coordinated by the VAR Program Specialist-Congregate Meal Site.

Training

Provided by the VAR Program Specialist-Congregate Meal Site and other volunteers. 

Dress Code

Volunteers are required to dress in casual attire and comfortable shoes.  

Work Environment

Work is performed indoors at the Clements Community Center facility. The Meal Program dining room is busy and sometimes noisy with exercise classes and music at various times of the week.

Receptionist/ check-in Position

Volunteer Purpose

Assist the VAR Program Specialist-Congregate Meal Site with general office duties and reception/check-in of participants. 

Responsibilities

The receptionist/check-in volunteer welcomes and checks the roster list for participant name as each person enters the dining area, and identifies cancellations. Volunteers in this position are supervised by the VAR Program Specialist-Congregate Meal Site.  

Responsibilities may include but not be limited to:

  • Greeting diners and guests in a friendly and welcoming manner.
  • Accurately completing forms that document diner’s attendance or cancellations and walk-ins.
  • Watching for diners, guests and/or walk-ins that do not stop by the reception table and documenting their attendance.
  • Ensuring all new participants check-in. Assist the VAR Program Specialist-Congregate Meal Site staff in handing out registration form when needed.
  • Checking with VAR Program Specialist-Congregate Meal Site Staff about any reservation questions. 
  • Maintaining confidentiality. 

Qualifications

Volunteer must be able to positively interact with participants, the public, other volunteers and staff. Must have the ability to communicate effectively, and bring a spirit of inclusiveness and fun to our programs. Perform light clerical duties.
