West Colfax Safety Project
Project Description
To efficiently construct the project, a two phased approach for project design completion and construction is being implemented. Phase 1 includes construction of the W. Colfax Ave. medians and associated elements. Phase 2 includes construction of the curbside and street edge treatment.
Phase 1:
This project phase will construct West Colfax median improvements. Project elements include a continuous center median, roadway lighting, landscaping, irrigation system, and pedestrian mid-block crossings between signalized intersections. The mid-block crossings will create designated areas for pedestrians to cross Colfax and make those crossings more predictable for motorists while providing greater protection for pedestrians.
Phase 2:
This project phase will construct curbside and street edge treatments. Project elements associated with this phase include curbside improvements focused on repurposing the outside traffic lane for pedestrian use from Sheridan Boulevard to Teller Street. This phase will also include installing continuous sidewalks along both sides of the street. Other improvements will include consolidating and closing driveway accesses, new traffic signals, signalized pedestrian mid-block crossings, new bus lane pullouts, pedestrian lighting, advanced warning signs for pedestrians on the roadway, storm water system improvements, landscaping, wayfinding monumentation, and public art.

December 2025 Update
Recently Completed Work
Construction of the median improvements and re-striping Colfax Ave. to two-lanes from Sheridan Blvd. to Teller St. are completed.
Current Work
None.
Upcoming Work
Landscaping is anticipated to extend into Spring 2026 for the median between Pierce St. and Teller St. Xcel Energy will also be on-site over the coming months, installing new metered power sources for the median lights and future improvements planned for Phase 2.
Traffic Impacts
West Colfax Ave. will continue to keep two lanes of traffic open during the coming phases of construction, with short-term lane closures down to one lane as needed to facilitate a safe working area for the contractor.
Target Project Completion
The main median improvements included in Phase 1 are complete, with some work extending into Spring of 2026 like wiring for the new median lights and landscaping. Phase 2 of the project is expected to start construction in late 2026 or early 2027.
