40 West Arts & The ArtLine

A family walking along the ArtLine.

40 West Arts is a Colorado Certified Creative District located in northeast Lakewood. The core area of the District extends several blocks north and south of West Colfax Avenue, approximately between Teller and Depew Streets. In 2011, the city and the community embarked on an effort to define the vision for the arts district. The process resulted in the creation of the adopted 40 West Arts District Urban Design and Mobility Concepts plan and the formation of a grassroots nonprofit organization, 40 West Arts. A second plan, the 40W Placemaking Implementation Plan, was created in 2015 to address specific streetscape, signage and placemaking recommendations for the District. Please visit the 40 West Arts website for more information about District galleries, First Friday events and more.

A key recommended action step in both plans, as well as several other adopted city plans, was to create the 40 West ArtLine. The ArtLine is a 4-mile long, interactive walking and biking arts route that connects parks, transit, historic neighborhoods and other destinations in 40 West Arts. A major Our Town Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts helped launched the first phase of the ArtLine in 2018 with over 70 temporary and permanent public art installations. Please visit the 40 West ArtLine website for details about this exciting Lakewood amenity and updates about future project phases.
