TRAFFIC AND PARKING CASES

If you have a pending traffic or parking ticket, you may call or email the court clerk at the above number or email address during the days and times listed to have your case resolved or continued.

If you have received a No Proof of Insurance summons, please send proof of your insurance (either for the violation date or current) in by email to prosecution@lakewoodco.org or by fax to 303-716-3762 (your insurance company may be able to do this for you). You MUST have the case number as well as defendant’s name and date of birth on all correspondence.

PAYMENTS DUE

Payments can still be made 1) online through the Lakewood Municipal Court website at municourtportal.lakewood.org. 2) over the phone by calling the court clerk, or 3) by United States Postal Service (USPS) mail. Phone or online payments are preferred.

You may receive a plea bargain that shows a point reduction and payment amount.  Payment will act as acceptance of the offer of a plea to a reduced charge. 

 ALL OTHER OUT-OF-CUSTODY CASES

If your case is not a traffic or parking ticket, please call or email the court at the above number or email address to have your case continued to another date when the court is reopened to the public. If you are on a surety bond, please contact your bondsman to have consent of surety faxed to 303-987-7447 or email the court at courts@lakewoodco.org on the same day you call to reset your case. Please give us your email and phone contact information so that we can keep your informed on the progress of your case. 

IN-CUSTODY CASES:

In-custody cases will be handled on a case-by-case basis with the goal of hearing all of them by telephone or electronically with the Jefferson County Jail at 1:15 p.m., Monday through Friday.

VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CASES

If you are a victim of domestic violence, please call 303-987-7191 (victim witness advocate) or 303-987-7450 (Municipal Prosecutors Office) with questions or concerns.

PUBLIC DEFENDER REPRESENTATION

If you are represented by the Public Defender’s Office and need to speak to them regarding your case, please call 303-806-8886.

PROBATION

Probation scheduled appointments will be conducted by video or telephone at your scheduled time. For juvenile cases, parents or guardians need to be present by video or telephone as well. If you have any questions, please call 303-987-7440, to speak or leave a message with your probation officer.

MOTIONS, FILINGS, COURT REQUESTS, PROOF OF CLASS OR COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS

If you have a motion, proof of completion of a class or community service hours, or other correspondence for the court, you may email it to the court at courts@lakewoodco.org, fax it to 303-987-7447,  or it can be mailed to the Lakewood Municipal Court, 445 South Allison Parkway, Lakewood, CO 80226.  Electronic submissions are preferred and ALWAYS maintain a copy of whatever documents you are providing to the court if using the USPS mail.

Lakewood Municipal Court has launched an innovative new court program that brings the court into the community, a step that expands access to justice for those with limited resources and connects them with services and resources. Individuals can resolve their cases while being provided with direct and immediate access to community providers, leading to decreased involvement in the criminal justice system, which improves the overall community.

Payment Options

Criminal Tickets

The Municipal Court is a court of record that hears misdemeanor offenses of alleged city ordinance violations. A criminal ticket is a legal notice to the violator that they have been accused of violating a criminal law. Violators are required to sign criminal tickets at the time they are issued. Traffic Tickets

The Municipal Court is a court of record that hears traffic offenses of alleged city ordinance violations. A ticket is a legal notice to the violator that they have been accused of violating a traffic law. Some violators are required to sign traffic tickets at the time they are issued. Signing a ticket acknowledges receipt and the duty to appear in court and does not serve as an admission of guilt or agreement with the charge. Some traffic violations carry criminal penalties, which will be handled in accordance with the criminal court process. These charges include, but are not limited to, no proof of insurance, speed contest, reckless driving, careless driving, and speeding 25 mph or more.

Parking Tickets

Parking tickets are issued for violating city of Lakewood parking ordinances and do not carry penalty points on your driver’s license. The tickets, which are placed on the windshield of a vehicle, will cite the specific offense(s) violated, identify the amount(s) that must be paid and the date and location of the violation. 

Payment is due 30 calendar days from the date of violation, and it is a plea of guilty to the original charge(s). By paying the fine rather than appearing in court, you give up all legal rights to which you are entitled and your appearance will be waived. Instructions are on the back of the parking ticket and envelope. 

To contest a parking ticket, appear at the Violations Bureau counter at 8:15 a.m., Monday through Thursday.

Judge Nicole Bozarth - Division A

Nicole Bozarth was appointed as Presiding Municipal Judge for the City of Lakewood in June 2022. Judge Bozarth was born and raised in Colorado. She graduated from Colorado State University in 2001 with a degree in Business Administration and received her Juris Doctorate from Drake University Law School in 2006. She was admitted to the Colorado bar in October 2006. In 2006, she began her legal career at the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office as a Deputy District Attorney.

Judge Kellie Eastin - Division B

Kellie Eastin was appointed to the bench in September 2022, after working in Jefferson County (almost exclusively) since 2011. Judge Eastin graduated from the Pennsylvania State University in 2009 with an undergraduate degree in Law & Society and received her Juris Doctorate from the Sturm College of Law in 2012. While in law school, she worked with the Civil Rights Clinic as a student attorney handling procedural due process claims; she also clerked for the Hon. Judge Christine Chauche.

Judge Corin Flannigan - Division C

Corin Flannigan is a Colorado native having grown up and attended schools in Greeley, Colorado.  After graduating from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature, she attended Golden Gate University receiving her Juris Doctorate in 1996.  Upon returning to Colorado, Judge Flannigan clerked with the Honorable Timothy Fasing of the 18^th Judicial District Court before joining the staff of the Adams County District Attorney’s Office in 1998.  Judge Flannigan worked as a Deputy D.A. and a Senior Deputy D.A. for eight years with the Adams County D.A.’s Office handling criminal cases at the misdemeanor, juvenile and felony levels.

The Marshal Division consists of a chief marshal, five full-time marshals, and five part-time marshals. All marshals are sworn certified peace officers by the state of Colorado. The marshals are responsible for processing warrants, transporting prisoners, operating a security check point for all people who enter the Public Safety Building and for the general safety of people who have business with the court.

Continuances

Requests for a continuance can be made in person, by email, fax or over the telephone prior to your court date. If you are under the age 18, in the majority of cases you will need to appear with a parent or legal guardian. The parent of a juvenile may continue the case without the juvenile’s presence when identification is provided. Attorneys requesting a continuance must file the appropriate motions with the court.

• An arraignment may be continued one time for up to two weeks. Additional continuances, or continuances longer than two weeks, must be approved by a judge.  

• To continue a trial, a waiver of the right to a speedy trial and an appearance before a judge may be required.

Public Defender

You may request a public defender at your arraignment.

• You must be facing the possibility of jail time.

• You must qualify financially. 

• Financial documentation must be provided to the court at the time of application to determine financial eligibility.

Your Rights as a Defendant

Trial Information

The Probation Division supervises and monitors both juvenile and adult offenders. Probation officers assess each individual case, refer defendants to classes or counseling, make recommendations to the court and manage the case for a determined amount of time. The Probation Division manages all supervised deferred judgment, probation and community service cases. The Probation Division also offers programs for youth.

Serving as a juror allows you to become more knowledgeable about your city, court and the law. Citizens who serve as jurors usually feel a sense of pride and respect for our justice system. The judges and staff of the Lakewood Municipal Court thank you for your service as a juror. Your service as a juror is respected and appreciated.

Jury trials are routinely set on Friday; however, they can be set on any weekday. Rarely will a jury trial last more than one day.

Call 303-987-7427, after 4 p.m., on the afternoon before your appearance date to determine whether your juror number is listed within the range of numbers. 

If your number is listed, you must report to the Lakewood Municipal Court at 8 a.m., the next day. Failure to report for jury service will result in a Contempt of Court citation.

Occasionally, the status of jury trials changes after the scheduled call-in time. If you would like to verify that your juror status has not changed before appearing, please call after 5 p.m., on the afternoon before your appearance date.

Jurors are paid: $3 to appear for jury service; $6 to serve on a jury trial.

Potential jurors are subpoenaed for one trial. Once the jury trial is completed or if the trial is canceled the jury service ends.

Each Juror will be given a Juror Notebook(PDF, 106KB) outlining the trial procedures and expectations.

If you are no longer a resident of the city of Lakewood, you must mail in or fax a copy of a current bill showing your name and new address. Your juror number must accompany this document.

Employment and child care are not considered valid reasons to be excused from jury service. A personal appearance before a municipal judge may be required. The court does not provide child care.

Excusal requests must be received at least two days before your service date. If you have additional questions, please contact the court immediately at 303-987-7407.

Reschedules

You may reschedule one time up to six months from your original jury service date.

In the event you are not available for service on the date for which you have been summoned, or you have a conflict, please notify the court immediately upon receiving your jury summons at 303-987-7407.

Rescheduling requests must be received two days before your service date.

By law, there are no economic, age-related or occupational exclusions from jury service.
