Assist with the Volunteers of America (VOA) lunch program in the Clements Community Center. Shifts are flexible and available in the kitchen or reception area. Meals are served Monday through Thursday and the first Friday of each month to participants over 60 years of age.

Volunteers are responsible for check-in, setting tables, limited meal preparation, serving food and beverages, and cleanup. Volunteers are not required to cook.

The volunteer will be working in cooperation with other volunteers, participants and City of Lakewood staff members. The dining room is busy and noisy at times, but fun! Training provided by the Older Adult Nutrition Coordinator and designees. No background check required for most positions.

Volunteers serve lunch.

Kitchen Position

Volunteer Purpose

To assist in the preparation and serving of meals. 

Responsibilities

Kitchen volunteers are responsible for serving food and beverages, limited meal preparation and cleanup. Volunteers are not required to cook.

Qualifications

Most positions will require you to be able to stand for the length of your shift with breaks when you need it. Volunteer must be able to positively interact with participants, the public, other volunteers and staff. Must have the ability to communicate effectively, and bring a spirit of inclusiveness and fun to our programs.  

Age Requirement 

Minimum age is 18.

Schedule

VOA Dining Site meals are served Monday through Thursday and the 1st Friday of each month. Volunteer position hours are approximately from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Scheduled days and hours may be negotiated with Senior Nutrition Program Coordinator.  

Training

Provided by the Senior Nutrition Program Coordinator and other volunteers. 

Dress Code

Volunteers are required to dress in casual attire and comfortable shoes.  

Work Environment

Work is performed indoors at the Clements Community Center facility. The VOA dining room is busy and sometimes noisy with exercise classes and music at various times of the week.  

Punctuality and Absenteeism

If the volunteer will be late or miss scheduled day(s), they must contact the Senior Nutrition Program Coordinator.

Receptionist Position

Volunteer Purpose

Assist the Older Adult Nutrition Coordinator with general office duties and reception of participants. 

Responsibilities

The Volunteer Receptionist greets and checks in patrons who participate in the Volunteers of America (VOA) congregate meal site program. Volunteers in this position are supervised by the Older Adult Nutrition Coordinator.  

Responsibilities may include but not be limited to:

  • Preparing reception area by putting out appropriate forms, money box, etc.
  • Greeting diners and guests in a friendly and welcoming manner.
  • Accurately completing forms that document diner’s attendance or cancellations and walk-ins.
  • Watching for diners, guests and/or walk-ins that do not stop by the reception table and documenting their attendance.
  • Ensuring all new participants check-in and complete appropriate forms.
  • Checking with Older Adult Nutrition Coordinator about any reservation questions.
  • Maintaining confidentiality. 

Qualifications

Volunteer must be able to positively interact with participants, the public, other volunteers and staff. Must have the ability to communicate effectively, and bring a spirit of inclusiveness and fun to our programs. Perform basic clerical duties.  

Age Requirement 

Minimum age is 21.
