Meal delivery in partnership with VOA and Lakewood Rides

The impacts of COVID-19 have made access to nutritional food even more difficult for older adults who are homebound or wish to stay safer at home. During this critical time, City of Lakewood staff at the Clements Community Center quickly changed operations to implement door-to-door meal delivery by request to Lakewood residents age 60 and older. From March through August, more than 5,000 frozen meals were delivered. The service expanded to include hot meals in September, and 120 hot lunches have been delivered to date.

“When the center’s Volunteers of America dining site closed due to public health precautions, we needed an immediate solution to get food to older adults in our community,” says Dawn Sluder, supervisor for older adult and transportation programs. “COVID-related shutdowns quickly isolated many of our seniors. By offering delivery through Lakewood Rides, we provide a friendly point of contact, too. For some people, this is their only opportunity to receive a meal.”

Thanks to Clements Community Center’s ongoing partnership with Volunteers of America and Lakewood Rides transportation service, Lakewood residents age 60 and older can continue to request meal delivery. For a $2.50 suggested contribution per meal, participants receive a nutritionally rich and deliciously prepared lunch. No one age 60 and older is denied service because of an inability to make a contribution.

Hot meals are delivered twice monthly on Thursdays. Frozen meal deliveries, which come with staples like bread and milk, can be requested in two-meal or five-meal packages and are delivered weekly on Mondays and Wednesdays. Deliveries can be made within Lakewood city limits to individual homes and to senior housing communities. Nonresidents are welcome to call and coordinate meal pickup at the center.

Individuals should reserve by calling 303-987-4833. For more information about the Clements Community Center’s services for older adults, visit
