The city has two openings for its Planning Commission along with positions on other boards and commissions, so volunteer for these as a fulfilling way to contribute to your community. Learn about specific qualifications and apply online by 5 p.m. on March 31 at Lakewood.org/GetOnBoard.
Planning Commission
There is one opening each for a resident from Ward 4 and 5. The commission conducts public hearings on rezoning and subdivision applications, approves certain special use permits, and reviews site plans. Commission members also serve on the Board of Adjustment. The commission meets at 7 p.m. the first and third Wednesdays of each month for regular meetings and at 6:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month for study sessions.
Board of Appeals
There are three openings for three-year terms beginning in April and ending March 31, 2026. This is a quasi-judicial body that decides appeals from any requirement or order made by the codes administrator. Members must have experience in building construction. Typically, the board meets four or five times a year for approximately one to two hours.
Historic Preservation Commission
There are two openings for four-year terms beginning in April and ending March 31, 2027. Applicants must have a background in architecture, history, urban planning, building trades, real estate or related fields. The commission conducts public hearings on applications for landmark designation, reviews alteration applications and certificates for relocating historically designated structures and makes recommendations to City Council. The commission must meet four times a year.
Lakewood Advisory Commission
This commission has several openings, which will remain until filled. In their advisory roles to City Council, members research specific issues of interest to residents and provide recommendations to council on potential action. Members should plan to attend the full commission meeting and a committee meeting each month. Applicants must also attend (virtually or by watching previously recorded meetings at LakewoodSpeaks.org) both a full commission meeting and an individual committee meeting before applying. Noxious Weed Local Advisory Board
There is one opening for a three-year term beginning in June and ending May 31, 2026. This independent board is responsible to the City Council and charged with reviewing and approving noxious weed management plans that are generated based on complaints received from adjacent property owners. It is not responsible for reviewing or approving city operational weed management plans implemented on publicly owned property. Members must be qualified by experience and training in landscaping, agriculture and natural resource management. Meetings occur as needed but typically happen one to three times a year for about two hours.
