Lakewood’s Earth Day Celebration promises to be a great day of celebrating the earth, and this year’s event has a new twist to it.

Learn all about living sustainably from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 22 at Heritage Lakewood Belmar Park, 801 S. Yarrow St. Then stay to celebrate with more live music, a beer garden and food trucks until 7 p.m.

The exhibits and activities to raise environmental awareness will again include the whimsical Parade of Species for kids and adults, so bring a favorite animal or bug costume to march in the parade.

Festival activities, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.:

  • Electric car display and ride-and-drive
  • Electric-bike rides
  • Historic buildings tours
  • Jeffco Public Library story time
  • Youth dancers from the Lakewood Cultural Center
  • Nature walks
  • Bicycle valet parking
  • Recycled art and crafts
  • Fitness classes
  • Home energy-efficiency demonstrations
  • Beer garden and music from the Wrecklunds, Jublingo, Polka Folka, and Big Hooray Bluegrass
  • Lakewood’s Parks and Colorado’s wildlife information
  • Food trucks

Celebration activities, 5-7 p.m.:

  • Music: Chain Station
  • Beer garden
  • Food trucks

Vendors and exhibitors are invited to apply by March 31 to be part of the event. Details and an application are available at Lakewood.org/EarthDay.

This year’s winner of the annual art contest for the festival (see art attached) is Shannon Cline, a teacher in Lakewood who loves nature, learning and spending time with her family. The winner’s artwork is used to promote the festival in posters and other items. She said of her entry, “I like to keep my art open-ended to allow for everyone’s interpretations to match their experiences."

The Earth Day event’s presenting sponsor is the Xcel Energy Electric Vehicle Team, and other sponsors include Alameda Connects, Fermelia Dental, Foothills Credit Union, Gravina’s Window Center of Littleton and FedEx.
