Fire restrictions in place for open space parks

Published on May 04, 2022

Lakewood has moved to fire restrictions for the city’s Bear Creek Lake Park, Bear Creek Greenbelt, Thunder Valley Motocross Park and William Frederick Hayden Park on Green Mountain. These will remain in place until further notice.

A fire ban had been in place for these parks, but the recent rainstorms have allowed the status to change to fire restrictions. For more details, visit Lakewood.org/FireRestrictions.

Permitted activities:

  •  Only fires that are contained in a designated, permanent grill or fire ring.
  • Smoking only in an enclosed vehicle or building or standing in an area 6 feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all combustible material. Smoking materials must be discarded in approved containers.
  • Liquid or gas fueled appliances including liquid gas grills, camp stoves and lanterns.

Activities that are always prohibited:

  • Building, maintaining, attending or using any fire or campfire except within a permanently constructed fire grate or grill in natural areas and parks.
  • Burning in a careless manner, leaving a fire unattended or failing to extinguish any fire.
  • Burning trash or debris.
  • Using any fireworks, including sparklers, Roman candles, sky lanterns or any other device containing an explosive substance.
  • Failing to take adequate measures, such as having a fire extinguisher, water or shovel nearby to prevent uncontrolled fires.
  • Use of model rockets in parks and open space.
