Lakewood's Smoking Law
The City Council has tentatively scheduled a study session on Feb. 6, 2012, to discuss Lakewood’s smoking law. Study sessions allow the City Council to take an in-depth look at an issue, receive information from staff and discuss the issue informally to determine if City Council members want to proceed with any formal action or changes.
- Online comments for City Council on Lakewood’s smoking law remains open at this time.
- At the Feb. 6, 2012, study session, staff will give a presentation to City Council that will include the online comments from residents as well as information received through the Jefferson County Public Health Tobacco Initiative.* Information on this initiative is provided below.
- A staff presentation during a study session is the first step for City Council to begin considering further action. If the City Council decides to take further action on Lakewood’s smoking law, an agenda item will appear for action during a Regular City Council meeting, and a public hearing to take public comment from residents attending the meeting will occur then.
- The City Council also has received a Final Draft Recommendation: City of Lakewood Mayor’s Ad Hoc Committee on the Lakewood Smoking Ordinance, and residents can continue to submit online comments on this item.
*Jefferson County Public Health Tobacco Prevention Initiative
- The Jefferson County Public Health Department received a grant in 2010 from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment for a Tobacco Prevention Initiative. The initiative is focused on reducing exposure to second-hand smoke and the initiation of youth into using tobacco in four Jefferson County jurisdictions including the City of Lakewood.
- The county is currently in the process of compiling its findings from the Tobacco Prevention Initiative.
- The Tobacco Prevention Initiative is a separate effort from the City Council’s process to review Lakewood’s smoking law. Online comments from Lakewood residents received here through the City’s website were forwarded to the county since 2010 for inclusion in the county’s report. If Lakewood residents wanted their comments included in the county’s report, they had to comment online here by Oct. 31, 2011.
- Comments received on the City’s website after Oct. 31 WILL NOT be sent to the county, but they will be provided to City Council.
