RESOLUTION:  2009-30

SUBJECT:  Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) Intergovernmental Grant Agreement with the City and County of Denver.

ADDRESS:   N/A

RECOMMENDATIONApproval

FUNDING SOURCE:   U.S. Department of Homeland Security

SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER:

The purpose of the UASI Grant is to facilitate homeland defense related planning, and supportive funding to prevent, mitigate, respond and recover from terrorist attacks involving the Denver Metro Area.  The UASI Grant program requires that the City and County of Denver and surrounding local governments (including the City of Lakewood), will cooperate in the purchase of equipment, training and joint exercises to achieve the overall objective of urban area security.

Year-to-date the Lakewood Police Department has received approximately $2.6 million in grant funding to improve its communication interoperability network.  This year (2009) Lakewood was awarded $399,000 for a radio communication upgrade to the antenna repeater site on Green Mountain.  No matching funds are required for the City to receive the funding.

In 2010, the Lakewood Police Department is also anticipating another grant award for $481,000 to digitize Lakewood’s radio systems and to make it compatible with the State’s 800 Mhz system.
