A RESOLUTION

SUPPORTING PROPOSED FEDERAL LEGISLATION S 757 AND HR 1828 – THE “CHARLIE WOLF NUCLEAR WORKERS COMPENSATION ACT”

WHEREAS, the Lakewood City Council is concerned about the health of employees of the former Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons Plant in Jefferson County; and

WHEREAS, many Lakewood residents are former employees of the plant; and

WHEREAS, many of those employees were exposed to toxic and radioactive materials at the facility and have subsequently become ill as the result of that exposure; and

WHEREAS, as of January of 2009 172,577 claims by ill former employees of the plant, or their surviving families, have been made and only 27.7% have been paid; and

WHEREAS, through no fault of their own, exposure records of many former employees were lost or incomplete, resulting in lengthy administrative hurdles in the consideration of their claims;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Lakewood, Colorado, that:

SECTION 1.  The City Council of the City of Lakewood hereby supports the Colorado Legislative Delegation in its efforts to reform the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act of 2000, to make it more effective in considering compensation claims by workers who may have become ill due to exposures at nuclear weapons facilities, such as Rocky Flats in Jefferson County.

SECTION 2.  The City Council of the City of Lakewood, Colorado hereby directs the Director of the Department of the Mayor and City Manager to send a copy of this resolution to the Colorado delegation in Washington, DC and to the Secretary of Energy.

INTRODUCED, READ AND ADOPTED by a vote of 11 for and 0 against at a regular meeting of the City Council on June 22, 2009 at 7 o'clock p.m. at Lakewood Civic Center, 480 South Allison Parkway, Lakewood, Colorado.
