OLDER AMERICANS MONTH

WHEREAS,   2009’s theme is “Living Today for a Better Tomorrow”, reflecting a national focus on preventative efforts and programs enabling older adults to have better health as they age; and

WHEREAS,   Lakewood’s older adults age 60 and over make up 18.6% of its approximately 148,000 residents, a higher percentage than the metro region; and

WHEREAS,   nationally, by 2030, one in every five Americans will be age 60 or older; and

WHEREAS,   it is the responsibility of the community to work together encouraging older adults to use the tools they need to stay physically and mentally healthy and engage in social activities; and

WHEREAS,   Lakewood continues to recognize the importance of its parks, cultural and recreational programs, supportive services, and facilities as an enhancement to our older adult citizen’s quality of life.

NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the City Council and the people of the City of Lakewood, Colorado, I, Bob Murphy, Mayor of the City of Lakewood, Colorado, by virtue of the authority vested in me, do hereby proclaim May 2009 as

OLDER AMERICANS MONTH

in the City of Lakewood.
