WHEREAS, many years after the passage of the Equal Pay Act of 1963 and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, women and people of color continue to suffer the consequences of inequitable pay differentials; and
WHEREAS, according to an analysis of data provided by the U.S. Department of Labor Statistics in 2007, women earn less in almost every occupational classification for which enough data is available, including occupations dominated by women (such as cashiers, retail sales, registered nurses and teachers); and
WHEREAS, according to the 2008 American Association of University Women (AAUW) Educational Foundation’s report “Gains in Learning, Gaps in Earning,” The Colorado earnings ratio between college-educated women and men who worked full time and year round in 2004-2006 was 72%; and
WHEREAS, according to a 2007 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report, Colorado women’s earnings as a percentage of men’s was 83.4% for median usual weekly earning of full-time wage and salary workers; and
WHEREAS, over a working lifetime, this wage disparity costs the average American woman and her family an estimated $700,000 to $2 million in lost wages, while fair pay strengthens the security of families and eases future retirement costs; and
WHEREAS, Tuesday, April 28th symbolizes the time in the new year in which the wages paid to American women catch up to the wages paid to men from the previous year.
NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the City Council and the people of the City of Lakewood, Colorado, I, Bob Murphy, Mayor of the City of Lakewood, Colorado, by virtue of the authority vested in me, do hereby proclaim April 28,, 2009 as
EQUAL PAY DAY
in the city of Lakewood.
