Proclamation
Earth Week
April 20-24, 2009
WHEREAS, it is the responsibility of each of us to recognize that all human life depends upon the Earth and upon one another for mutual existence, well-being, and development; and
WHEREAS, human activities can result in global and local environmental change to the detriment of human health and biological diversity; and
WHEREAS, local communities can lead the way in taking steps to protect and preserve natural resources by promoting sustainable development, facilitating efficient land-use and transportation practices, encouraging sustainable energy and water consumption, and reducing waste; and
WHEREAS, a community focused on sustainability initiatives can cultivate a thriving and vigorous local economy; and
WHEREAS, the first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970, with the goal of inspiring environmental awareness and encouraging the conservation, protection, and appreciation of our nation’s natural resources; and
WHEREAS, celebrating Earth Day serves as a catalyst for advancing the goal of Lakewood’s Comprehensive Plan to create balance among the environment, the economy and society to ensure that we do not compromise the quality of life for future generations.
NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the City Council and the people of the City of Lakewood, I, Bob Murphy, Mayor of the City of Lakewood, Colorado, by virtue of the authority vested in me, do hereby proclaim April 20-24, 2009 as
EARTH WEEK
in the City of Lakewood.
