RFCA - Resolution 2008-85 REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION

RESOLUTION: 2008-85

SUBJECT: Expanding the Executive Committee of the Lakewood Advisory Commission For An Inclusive Community to twelve members.

RECOMMENDATION: Adoption of this resolution will expand the Executive Committee of the Lakewood Advisory Commission For An Inclusive Community to twelve members, which will consist of nine committee chairmen and three Executive Committee officers. This resolution will also change the name of the Historic Landmark Committee to the Historic Preservation Committee.

SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER: Currently, the Executive Committee consists of nine members selected by their committee to sit on the Executive Committee. The Advisory Commission Officers are selected from this group of nine committee chairs, meaning the Commission Officers are also committee chairs.

The proposed change to the membership of the Executive Committee would allow for the three officer positions (Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary) in addition to the nine committee representatives, meaning the Officers are not simultaneously serving as committee chairs. All twelve members of the Executive Committee will have full voting rights. Though the Officers will still serve on a committee, this change will allow the Officers to focus on leadership, process, and other critical Commission issues without possibly being overwhelmed by committee and Commission demands.

While the Historic Landmark Committee of the Advisory Commission for an Inclusive Community is charged with looking at the issues surrounding the preservation of historical properties and sites, it should not be implied that only structural buildings have historical value. There is a wide range of historically valuable icons. From irrigation ditches to graveyards…from rose bushes to Indian mud pit…from rock survey markers to stone chimneys…from photos and written documents to our memories and oral traditions…from peaceful open space and rural areas to hectic urban communities…from dinosaur bones to buried artifacts…from memorial makers to beautiful buildings…from landscape to signs…from orchard trees to fruit stand homes…they all have an intrinsic value to our City.
