A RESOLUTION
FOR THE ENDORSEMENT OF JEFFERSON COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT, BALLOT ISSUES 3A AND 3B
WHEREAS, the Jefferson County Public School District has two issues on the ballot this fall, one to raise money for school building improvements and one to raise money for direct-student services; and
WHEREAS, the Jefferson County Public School District serves the children of the City of Lakewood; and
WHEREAS, a successful bond issue (3B) would result in physical improvements to 37 of the public schools in Lakewood; and
WHEREAS, many of the improvements are to school security; and
WHEREAS, the City Council understands the impact of well maintained school buildings on neighborhoods and property values; and
WHEREAS, a successful mill levy increase (3A) would have a positive economic impact to the Lakewood community by ensuring the continued provision of top-rated educational opportunities that in turn attract families and employers to the area; and
WHEREAS, the City Council further understands the negative economic impact to the Lakewood community of a potential job loss of 540 teachers and numerous other reductions in clinic aides, paraprofessionals and other support staff should the mill levy increase not pass; and
WHEREAS, the Jefferson County Public School District has demonstrated fiscal responsibility and accountability since its last bond and mill levy increases in 2004.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Lakewood, Colorado that:
The Mayor and City Council declare that the proposed Jefferson County School
District bond and mill levy election issues are in the best interests of the
citizens of Lakewood and do hereby endorse and urge the passage of both Ballot
Issues 3A and 3B on the 2008 ballot.
INTRODUCED, READ AND ADOPTED by a vote of 8 for and 2 against, at a regular
meeting of the City Council on October 13, 2008, at 7 o'clock p.m. at the Lakewood
Civic Center, 480 South Allison Parkway, Lakewood, Colorado.
Bob Murphy, Mayor
