RESOLUTION: 2008-59
SUBJECT: Resolution supporting a grant application to Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) and Jefferson County Open Space (JCOS) Joint Venture Grant Program for funding for the park improvements at Coyote Gulch Park, including the construction of a baseball field, and authorizing the Director of Community Resources to sign the grant agreements if approved.
ADDRESS: 2501 S. Gladiola Way
RECOMMENDATION: The Department of Community Resources recommends that City Council approve the resolution supporting the grant applications to GOCO and JCOS Joint Venture Grant Program requesting funding for park improvements at Coyote Gulch Park. If approved, the Department also recommends authorizing the Director of Community Resources to sign the grant agreements.
FUNDING SOURCE: The grant application to Great Outdoors Colorado will request $200,000, and the grant application to Jefferson County Open Space Joint Venture Grant Program will request $450,000. If the grants are approved, the Community Resources Department will utilize necessary matching funds through local appropriations and allocations.
SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER: The City of Lakewood as well as Jefferson County suffer from a lack of field space for organized sports, limiting the number of youth that can participate in healthy recreation and leisure activities. Because of the growing demand for these activities, the development of this field is recommended. With the addition of this baseball field and the improved park amenities, expanded opportunities for recreation and play will be available to the community. Work to the site will include site preparation and demolition; earthwork and grading; concrete work; reconfiguration and expansion of the parking lot including paving; installation of baseball backstop and field surface; site furnishings and landscaping; and restroom facility.
Financial support for the project has already been secured through individual and business contributions. The Department of Community Resources will continue to work with the neighborhood on the final design of the project.
