ITEM 3 - PROGRESS REPORT - LAKEWOOD ADVISORY COMMISSION FOR AN INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY

Erma Steck, Advisor/Coordinator, Lakewood Advisory Commission For An Inclusive Community (LACFAIC) gave a PowerPoint presentation regarding the progress of the Commission since it's inception six months ago. There were self-introductions of Commission Members present. Mrs. Steck informed the Council that a survey of commissioners was conducted and today's presentation included the results of said survey. Fifty-three members of Lakewood's Advisory Commission for An Inclusive Community received the survey, and 34% responded. The survey noted that the Advisory Commission is a workable and productive committee, it is a worthwhile venture, and beneficial to the citizens of Lakewood. It was noted that improvement in communication on all levels is needed.

Randy Little, President of the LACFAIC, gave a brief history of the Commission, and noted that nine committees have been formed. One of the main goals of the Commission is to be the "eyes and ears" in the Lakewood community for the City Council, and to provide ongoing input to the Council from the citizens. Additionally, the Commission, on behalf of the City Council, is empowered to research various issues. He extended heartfelt "thanks" to Mayor Murphy and other Council representatives for attending Commission Meetings.

Lorna Fox, Secretary of the LACFAIC, reported on the various committees and their accomplishments. The Environmental Committee will work on what can be done in regards to recycling, and building green in the City of Lakewood. The Diversity/ Education Committee will make suggestions/plans as to what to do with funds that have been donated, i.e., outreach programs, seminars, etc. The Business Committee will come up with suggestions on how to support small businesses in the City of Lakewood. Additionally, the Youth Committee will research other cities to get their input on the graffiti ordinance, and what they may have in place to prevent graffiti on city property. The Senior Committee will research other communities to see what type programs they have in place for senior citizens. It's also been suggested that the Estival Festival be brought back in some form-either as a one day event or on a weekend. She noted reports from all committees will be done within the upcoming two-three months.

Johann Cohn, Vice-President of the LACFAIC, stated that City Council had asked several questions about the Commission and should any changes be implemented. It appears that the census of the Commission is to make no changes at this time in the membership number. They feel the right committees are in place, but more time is needed to truly evaluate each committee and to get them functioning well, thus, they should let the present structure function for now.

As more discussion ensued, Council Members asked questions and made suggestions in regards to getting better results in participation at meetings, on the surveys, etc. It was agreed by all, that better communication is needed, i.e. emails, sending self-addressed/stamped envelopes with surveys in order to generate more responses.

Mayor Murphy and Council Members extended "thanks" to the Commission for their hard work. The progress they have accomplished in six months speaks highly of their commitment and love for the City of Lakewood and its citizens.

For all interested, the LACFAIC meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Civic Center South, and public comment is encouraged.
