P R O C L A M A T I O N
Recognizing November 2008 as
Mile High United Way Month
WHEREAS, Colorado and our community is the birthplace of the United Way movement, beginning with the 1887 creation of the Charity Organization Society, which evolved over the years into Mile High United Way and into 1,350 United Way affiliates across the nation; and
WHEREAS, Mile High United Way works with local cities and neighborhoods, helping youth succeed in school and graduation, and adults achieve self sufficiency and financial stability; and
WHEREAS, Mile High United Way maximizes the power of collective generosity, joining together local government, nonprofits, business and faith communities to accomplish what no one organization can do alone; and
WHEREAS, Mile High United Way works right here, in Lakewood, partnering with Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of Colorado, Jefferson County Public Schools, Family Homestead, Jefferson Center for Mental Health, and others to help the community; and
WHEREAS, in the month of November, Mile High United Way will be asking all members of our community to "Give to Mile High United Way" to create healthier communities through its School Readiness, Youth Success and Adult Self Sufficiency initiatives.
NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the City Council and the people of the City of Lakewood, Colorado, I, Bob Murphy, Mayor of the City of Lakewood, Colorado, by virtue of the authority vested in me, do hereby proclaim November 2008 as
MILE HIGH UNITED WAY MONTH
