PROCLAMATION
Recognizing May as
OLDER AMERICANS MONTH
WHEREAS, 2008's theme is "Working Together for Strong, Healthy, and Supportive Communities," which is in keeping with Lakewood's theme of an "All Inclusive Community"; and
WHEREAS, Lakewood's older adults age 60 and over comprise 23,674 or 16.2% of its total population; and
WHEREAS, by 2015, Jefferson County's residents age 60+ will increase by nearly 18,000, foretelling a trend in the growth of Lakewood's older adult population; and
WHEREAS, nationally 78,000 baby boomers will begin reaching traditional retirement age 65 in 2011, a fact which spotlights increased attention to the needs of older adults; and
WHEREAS, older Americans are valuable members of our society who are rich with experience and deserving of our respect; and
WHEREAS, our older citizens of today and tomorrow promise to be among the most active and engaged older adult population in our Nation's history; and
WHEREAS, it is the responsibility of supportive communities to enhance the quality of life for older adults and prepare for a growing and changing population.
NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the City Council and the people of the City of Lakewood, I Bob Murphy, Mayor of the City of Lakewood, Colorado, by virtue of the authority vested in me, do hereby proclaim and recognize May 2008 as
OLDER AMERICANS MONTH
in the City of Lakewood and commend our older American community.
