P R O C L A M A T I O N

Earth Week
April 21-25, 2008

WHEREAS, the well-being of the 6.6 billion people on Earth is intricately woven within the complex web of life; and

WHEREAS, human activities are resulting in global and local environmental change to the detriment of human health and biological diversity; and

WHEREAS, local communities can lead the way in taking steps to protect and preserve our natural resources by promoting sustainable development, facilitating efficient land-use and transportation practices, preserving natural habitat, encouraging sustainable energy and water consumption, and reducing waste; and

WHEREAS, a community which promotes sustainable development, preserves natural habitat, encourages energy efficiency and participates in regional sustainability initiatives, cultivates a thriving and vigorous local economy; and

WHEREAS, Lakewood's Comprehensive Plan recognizes that the health of Lakewood's environment and ecosystems is a vital community asset essential to the health and quality of life of Lakewood residents; and

WHEREAS, we possess the potential to employ our abundant creativity and innovation, as well as education to resolve this crisis of environmental degradation; and

WHEREAS, the United States of America recognizes April 22nd as Earth Day; and

WHEREAS, celebrating Earth Day serves as a catalyst for advancing the goal of Lakewood's Comprehensive Plan to promote community stewardship of natural and man-made resources and environments.

NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the City Council and the people of the City of Lakewood, I, Bob Murphy, Mayor of the City of Lakewood, Colorado, by virtue of the authority vested in me, do hereby proclaim April 21-25, as

EARTH WEEK, 2008

in the City of Lakewood.
