RESOLUTION: 2007-48
SUBJECT: Abolishing four Citizen Advisory Commissions and creating an advisory commission for an inclusive community.
RECOMMENDATION: Approval
FUNDING SOURCE: General Fund - Mayor & City Council Budget
SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER:
In February of this year City Council directed the Director of the Mayor and City Manager's Office to convene a team to evaluate advisory commissions and make recommendations on possible changes to the existing structure that would both enrich the experience for the citizen volunteers serving on commissions as well as make the groups more useful as advisors to City Council.
The three-person team consisting of Council Member Diana Allen, Police Chief Ron Burns, and Joni Inman, Director of the Mayor and City Manager's Office, conducted interviews, researched best practices and arrived at a recommendation for consolidation of the existing advisory commissions into one multi-disciplined commission.
The City Council met in a Study Session on the topic, June 4. At that time the mayor appointed two additional Council Members, Debbie Koop and Ed Peterson, to join with Diana Allen in conducting still more interviews and to convene back with staff for the finalization of a plan. That was accomplished in August.
Council again discussed the issue at its August 20 Study Session and agreed to include the support position of Commission Coordinator/Advisor in the proposed 2008 Budget. The resolution presented here is the next official step in creating the new "Commission for an Inclusive Community."
