RESOLUTION: 2007-10
SUBJECT: Request to Jefferson County Open Space to add City designated priority parkland to their countywide acquisition priority list.
ADDRESS: 5370 West Ohio Avenue
RECOMMENDATION: The Department of Community Resources recommends the approval of a resolution requesting the designation of a property in Lakewood to be submitted to Jefferson County Open Space as a parkland acquisition priority.
FUNDING SOURCE: Jefferson County Open Space Program
SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER: In 1999, the voters of Jefferson County authorized the Open Space Program to issue bonds to acquire high priority park and open space parcels throughout the County. The county is on its third and final issuance of bonds and has asked the cities in Jefferson County for their highest acquisition priorities.
The Department of Community Resources is recommending the property located at 5370 West Ohio Avenue, as there is a willing seller and the acquisition can be completed in 2007. A longer list of priorities will be developed for approval at the conclusion of the Community Resources Master Planning process.
The 7.83-acre site on the former South Sheridan Baptist school campus contains a regulation football field, a practice field, a playground, maintenance building, and parking. With minimal improvements, this parcel could relieve over usage of Ray Ross Park immediately, and add to the much needed field inventory in Lakewood.
Designating this parcel as a high priority and initiating the county acquisition process, will not guarantee the parcel will be acquired for park and open space purposes. In the event that the County can come to terms to acquire properties, a resolution will be brought before Council regarding the acceptance of the proposed acquisition.
