REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
ORDINANCE: O-2007-14
SUBJECT: Mayor and City Council Salaries
RECOMMENDATION: Approval of Ordinance
FUNDING SOURCE: General Fund
SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER:
The pay for city council members was last increased in November of 1997 (10 years ago.) The pay for mayor was last increased in 1999 (eight years ago.) A review of council and mayor salaries begins each November prior to a mayoral election. The City Council, following the last review, opted to forgo increases due to budget constraints.
The current salary for mayor is $24,000. The current salary for a city council member is $9,126. After careful consideration of the requirements of the position, combined with salaries of elected officials in comparable cities, the staff is recommending an increase in city council members' pay to $12,873 annually; and an increase in the salary of mayor to $30,402 annually.
The increase reflected here represents a 3 percent annually compounded increase over a period of eight years for the position of mayor; and a 3.5 percent annually compounded increase, over a period of what will be 12 years, for the position of city council member.
These increases will bring Lakewood's elected representatives more into alignment with the compensation of those in similarly sized cities and reflect the increased responsibilities, expectations, and time commitment now required by a city of 146,300 people.
Following discussion at the City Council Study Session of April 16, the effective dates in the revised ordinance will be as follows:
Increases will go into effect for the position of mayor immediately following the municipal election of November 6, 2007. Increases will go into effect for the position of city council member immediately following the municipal election of 2009.
A revised ordinance, reflecting your clear direction, is included in the packet.
Your vote will be on "amended ordinance O-2007-14."
