Recognizing The National Federation of the Blind
MEET THE BLIND MONTH
October 2007
WHEREAS, the National Federation of the Blind was founded in 1940 to end discrimination against the blind and to secure first-class citizenship for all blind persons; and
WHEREAS, today the Federation, representing more than 50,000 members across the country, continues to work to secure equal rights and opportunities for the blind; and
WHEREAS, the Colorado affiliate of the Federation established the Colorado Center for the Blind in 1988 to provide blindness skills training for blind adults, youth, and children in the areas of independent travel, home management, Braille, adaptive technology, and many other areas of daily life; and
WHEREAS, the Federation works to change attitudes about blindness by providing
information about blindness to parents, teachers, school administrators and
to leaders in the business, political, social, and civic arenas; and
WHEREAS, since blind people and blindness are still frequently misunderstood,
the Federation has developed a public education campaign, Meet the Blind Month,
to create opportunities for the people of Lakewood to learn firsthand that blind
people are basically like everyone else; and
WHEREAS, the Colorado affiliate of the National Federation of the Blind, now in its 53rd year, invites neighbors, coworkers, and classmates to join them wherever Meet the Blind events are being held throughout the month of October to learn how blind people lead full and active lives.
NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the City Council and the people of the City of Lakewood, I, Steve Burkholder, Mayor of the City of Lakewood, Colorado, by virtue of the authority vested in me do hereby proclaim the month of October 2007, as
National Federation of the Blind
MEET THE BLIND MONTH
in the City of Lakewood.
GIVEN under my hand and Seal of the City of Lakewood, this 8th day of October,
2007. A.D.
