Recognizing the Month of April
As National Autism Awareness Month
In the City of Lakewood
WHEREAS, Autism affects one in 169 children in Colorado; and
WHEREAS, Autism can be easily misdiagnosed and as a result children and adults can be wrongly stereo typed as unable to participate in their schools or communities; and
WHEREAS, those family's with an Autistic child can sometimes find it difficult to identify service providers to address basic needs; and
WHEREAS, much needs to be done to raise awareness about Autism in Colorado and in the City of Lakewood; and
WHEREAS, an organization such as the Autism Society of Colorado helps to serve Lakewood and those family's facing these challenges to meet basic needs; and
WHEREAS, Lakewood is an inclusive community that recognizes the potential of all its citizens.
BE IT THEREFORE resolved that I, Steve Burkholder, Mayor of the City of Lakewood, on behalf of the City Council and the Residents of the City of Lakewood, do hereby proclaim the month of April as Autism Awareness Month in the City of Lakewood and encourage all citizens to become more aware of Autism, its affects on children and families, and to encourage our community to support those who have been diagnosed with Autism through education, job opportunities, and acceptance for the valuable contribution they can make to our community and its citizens.
