Request for Council Action - R-2006-038 REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION

RESOLUTION: 2006-38

SUBJECT: Entering into an Intergovernmental Agreement with the Regional Transportation District (RTD) for design of bicycle and pedestrian overpass improvements over Wadsworth Boulevard and Kipling Street along the route of the West Corridor Light Rail Transit Project.

RECOMMENDATION: Approval.

SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER:

The project will design bicycle and pedestrian overpasses that provide grade-separated crossings over both major arterials for the existing bikeway/sidewalk. Lakewood staff submitted the sites as a Transportation Improvement Plan project through Denver Regional Council Of Governments and was successful in obtaining 50 percent matching federal funds of $1,090,000. Lakewood will contract with RTD to use their west corridor design team for the bridge designs. It is anticipated that construction will be completed in coordination with the RTD West Corridor project.

The design of the light rail bridges is currently in process and the sidewalk/bikeway overpasses must be structurally compatible with the overpasses which carry light rail. The total City match for design of these projects will be $200,000 in the Revised 2006 Capital Improvement Fund budget. The 2009 Capital Improvement Fund budget will include the City match of $890,000 for construction.
