Request for Council Action - R-2006-5 REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION

RESOLUTION: 2006-5

SUBJECT: Contract amendment for 8th & Kipling Storm Drainage Improvements.

RECOMMENDATION: Approval.

SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER:

On June 13, 2005 City Council adopted Resolution 2005-39 awarding the 8th and Kipling Storm Drainage Improvements Project to EDGE Contracting Inc. and authorizing up to $873,621 for construction costs. The project installed storm sewer inlets and pipe in the vicinity of 8th Place and Kipling that will transport stormwater to Lakewood Gulch at 10th and Kipling. The improvements alleviate flooding in storm events at the 8th Place and Kipling intersection and reduce private property damage east of Kipling.

During construction a conflict was encountered between existing sanitary sewer service pipes and the new storm sewer. The solution required installation of a new sanitary sewer pipe in Kline Drive between 8th Place and 9th Avenue. The unanticipated work included additional trenching, pipe installation, and asphalt removal and replacement. With the unanticipated work, the total project cost exceeds the authorized contract maximum by approximately 6%. It is recommended that City Council increase the contract maximum to $928,621.
