PROCLAMATION
Recognizing the Stay in Circulation campaign to improve awareness of vascular disease
WHEREAS, more than 8 million Americans suffer from a vascular illness known as Peripheral Arterial Disease, which is the hardening of arteries in the arms and legs; and
WHEREAS, one in 20 Americans over the age of 50 have P.A.D., which can cause reduced mobility or increase the risk of heart attack and stroke; and
WHEREAS, many people with P.A.D. do not experience any symptoms, but the disease is caused by the same risk factors that lead to heart disease; and
WHEREAS, people who are at risk for P.A.D. include those older than 50 years of age, African Americans, those who smoke or have smoked, those with diabetes, high cholesterol or those who have a family history of heart attack, stroke or vascular disease; and
WHEREAS, P.A.D. is a common and treatable disease but is still largely unknown and often unrecognized; and
WHEREAS, the Vascular Disease Foundation, a national group located in Lakewood, is spearheading an effort to raise awareness about the disease through the "Stay In Circulation" campaign.
NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the City Council and the people of Lakewood, I, Steve Burkholder, Mayor of the City of Lakewood, Colorado, by virtue of the authority vested in me, do hereby recognize the Vascular Disease Foundation's Stay in Circulation campaign in the City of Lakewood.
