Honoring the Lakewood Breakfast Optimist Club "Flags Along Colfax"

WHEREAS, the Lakewood Breakfast Optimist Club contributes greatly to our community with its ongoing "Flags Along Colfax" project, placing more than 70 United States flags in the median of West Colfax Avenue, between Sheridan Boulevard and Oak Street, for every national holiday; and

WHEREAS, the Optimist's "Flags Along Colfax" have promoted patriotism and displayed civic pride for over 40 years, beginning with the first display on the Fourth of July, 1963; and

WHEREAS, the "Flags Along Colfax" project has expanded to include displays on September 11 to honor those who lost their lives in terrorist attacks in 2001, and was expanded again this spring so that thousands of runners and spectators in the Colorado Colfax Marathon were greeted by dozens of U.S. flags along the Lakewood portion of the marathon route; and

WHEREAS, Optimist members demonstrate personal sacrifice and civic support to carry on the Flags Along Colfax project, including fundraising efforts to replace worn flags, and volunteering early mornings and late evenings to place and remove the flags; and

WHEREAS, in addition to "Flags Along Colfax," the Optimist members work to provide a helping hand and bring out the best in a very important part of the Lakewood community - our youth.

NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the City Council and the people of Lakewood, I, Steve Burkholder, Mayor of the City of Lakewood, Colorado, by virtue of the authority vested in me, do extend grateful appreciation for and hereby honor
