P R O C L A M A T I O N

Recognizing the Inaugural
Post-News Colorado Colfax Marathon
May 21, 2006

WHEREAS, Colfax Avenue, America's longest "Main Street," has historic roots as a wagon road across the plains to the early settlements at the foot of the Rocky Mountains and evolved into U.S. Highway 40, a main route lined with vibrant neighborhoods and businesses serving residents and travelers; and

WHEREAS, determined efforts by many people to reverse a long decline in the Colfax Corridor have sparked a Colfax renaissance across the metropolitan area; and

WHEREAS, that renewal continues with the inaugural Post-News Colorado Colfax Marathon on May 21, 2006, bringing thousands of runners, walkers, and wheelchair athletes from around the country to the 26-mile route along Colfax Avenue, from the plains in Aurora through the heart of Denver and to the foothills in Lakewood; and

WHEREAS, the Colorado Colfax Marathon is certified and sanctioned by the USA Track and Field Club. It will host the 2006 WTFUSA National Wheelchair Marathon Championships and the 2006 USA Track and Field Club Marathon Relay Championships and has been designated as a qualifier for the prestigious Boston Marathon; and

WHEREAS, through the nonprofit Colorado Colfax Marathon Partnership, the net proceeds from the event will go to Colorado Kids, a charity dedicated to preventing obesity and promoting fitness of elementary school children across Colorado.

NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the City Council and the people of Lakewood, I, Steve Burkholder, Mayor of the City of Lakewood, Colorado, by virtue of the authority vested in me, do hereby recognize the

Inaugural Post-News Colorado Colfax Marathon and do heartily thank the elected officials of Denver, Aurora and Lakewood, the Marathon Board of Directors, race managers, and hundreds of volunteers, City employees, sponsors, Colfax businesses and others working to accomplish this major undertaking; and do encourage Lakewood residents to enjoy this historic event as marathon participants, race volunteers, cheering spectators, and patrons of Colfax businesses.
