P R O C L A M A T I O N
COVER THE UNINSURED WEEK
May 1 - 7, 2006
WHEREAS, nearly 44 million Americans, equal to the combined population of 24 states, do not have health care coverage; and
WHEREAS, approximately 720,000 Coloradoans do not have health care coverage; and
WHEREAS, eight out of 10 people who are uninsured are in working families; and
WHEREAS, there are 8.5 million children in America without health coverage; and
WHEREAS, uninsured Americans suffer more sickness and die younger than those who are covered, and suffer needlessly because they go without the health care they need; and
WHEREAS, with health care costs climbing rapidly, employers and working families in our community are finding it harder to afford coverage.
NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the City Council and the people of Lakewood, I, Steve Burkholder, Mayor of the City of Lakewood, Colorado, by virtue of the authority vested in me, do hereby proclaim
May 1 - 7, 2006 as
COVER THE UNINSURED WEEK
in the City of Lakewood.
