III. COMMISSIONER REPORTS
Partnerships: Commissioner Karen Kellen
No report.

Events: Commissioner Elzia Sekou
Commissioner Sekou advised that Margaret Sawyer is currently working with Red Rocks on the project, and she is presently updating the mailing list of the schools.

Members were in agreement that the media competition can be judged by Commission members during the 2006 planning session just like this year.

Awareness Through Media Tools: Commissioner Harry Cullis
No report.

Red Rocks Community College Liaison: Commissioners Cuellar and Roybal
Commissioners Cuellar and Roybal attended the Red Rocks Diversity Council meeting recently. Commissioner Roybal recommended that the American G.I. Forum present the colors at the Martin Luther King Day event at Red Rocks. The Diversity Council is in the process of selecting a keynote speaker and community leader. They are open to suggestions for community leader from this Commission.

A suggestion to the liaisons, Carlos and Pete, was to request if the Diversity Council would consider holding the MLK breakfast in a larger room at Red Rocks like the cafeteria.

Commissioner Roybal stated that as soon as he receives the minutes from Red Rocks, he will forward them to Margaret Sawyer.

IV. UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Commissioner Survey
Members are reminded to get their survey to Rick Lopez as soon as possible, so that a database can be created and then e-mailed to all Commission members.

Nominations for Second Vice-Chair Position
This will be tabled and discussed at the January planning retreat.

Monthly Meeting Schedule
A motion was made by Commissioner Sekou to eliminate the July meeting in 2006 and seconded by Commissioner Cuellar. Everyone present was in favor of this motion.

V. NEW BUSINESS
Cherry Creek Diversity Conference
Does this Commission desire to send attendees?
It was the consensus of members that the Commission should not send anyone to the conference. However, Commissioner Hardwick would like to attend next year. Commissioner Sekou will contact the liaison to the Youth Commission who is Kit Botkins from Community Resources. His suggestion was that maybe the Youth Commission and this Commission could split the cost to send both youth and a member from this Commission to the Cherry Creek Diversity Conference. This item will be tabled for the November meeting.

Councilor Koop made a suggestion that commissioners should consider attending neighborhood association meetings. Commission members could hand out their brochure at that time and listen to any community or diversity issues the group may have. Members stated that this was a good suggestion. Therese will work on getting an updated list of the registered neighborhood associations in the City of Lakewood and send a letter requesting a schedule of their meetings for the year 2006, so that one or two Commission members could attend.

December Holiday Dinner
Members discussed where to have the appreciation dinner and the date for the dinner will be Wednesday, December 7, 2005. Commissioner Cuellar will contact Lucky Strike at Belmar and Jillian's at Colorado Mills and Chair Nakandakare will contact Elephant Bar to get details for group parties. Frank's Bar-B-Cue, Heritage Music Hall, the Fort, and White Fence Farm were a few of the possible locations to be considered. Members should give this some thought and e-mail their ideas to Margaret Sawyer.

Schedule Date for January Planning Retreat
The date for the January planning retreat will be Saturday, January 7, 2006 in the Cabinet Room beginning at 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

VI. ANNOUNCEMENTS
Commissioner Hardwick suggested since the City of Lakewood has a self-sufficiency program in the Housing Department, that the Commission use them as a resource and invite these residents to our meetings to express their concerns or issues they may have related to culture or diversity matters. Therese will e-mail the contact numbers for the supervisor and coordinator of the self-sufficiency program to Commissioner Hardwick.

Therese advised that she was contacted by a citizen who recently found out that this Commission was in existence. She stated she was concerned that the City does not do anything to promote Kwanzaa or Hanukkah and stated that the banners alongside Alameda Avenue centered around Christmas.

Bill Taylor advised that the holiday banners are done by the Alameda-Gateway Association. Since this Commission is not event driven, it was suggested that she contact the Television Services Coordinator, Kit Lammers, about holiday messages on Channel 8 and Niña Johnson, the Heritage, Culture and the Arts Manager. Therese will convey this information to her.

Commissioner Cuellar advised that this Friday night, a murder mystery will be held at the Lakewood Cultural Center. This is hosted by Citizens for Lakewood's Future and will benefit the after school arts program.

The next monthly meeting will be held Wednesday, November 2, at 6:30 p.m. at Horan- McConaty Funeral Home, 3101 South Wadsworth Boulevard.

VII. ADJOURNMENT
With no further business to come before the Commission, a motion was made by Commissioner Cuellar to adjourn and seconded by Commissioner Roybal. The meeting was adjourned at 7:39 p.m.
