REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION

RESOLUTION: 2005-76

SUBJECT: Entering into an Intergovernmental Agreement with the Colorado Department of Transportation for intersection improvements at Colfax Avenue and Simms Street.

RECOMMENDATION: Approval.

SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER:

The project will reconstruct the Colfax Avenue and Simms Street intersection to reduce vehicular traffic congestion. Lakewood staff submitted the site as a Traffic Improvement Program project through Denver Regional Council Of Governments and was successful in obtaining federal funds.

The project will reconstruct the north side of Colfax Avenue and the west side of Simms Street to add turn lanes. A second northbound to westbound left turn lane and a second westbound to southbound left turn lane will be added. Also an eastbound to southbound right turn lane will be added. Lakewood staff will design, acquire rights-of-way and administer construction of the improvements. It is anticipated that design work will be completed in 2006, right-of-way acquisition completed in 2007 and construction completed by the end of 2008.

Federal funds totaling $1,571,000 have been allocated for the project. The City's contribution is estimated to be $673,000 including staff time. The money for Lakewood's share is available from the Capital Improvement Fund.
