RESOLUTION: 2005-20
SUBJECT: Resolution supporting the creation of the Rocky Flats Cold War Museum
ADDRESS: Not applicable
RECOMMENDATION: Adopt the resolution
FUNDING SOURCE: Not required from the City
SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER: The Rocky Flats Cold War Museum's board of directors has asked Lakewood City Council, as well as other city councils, to express its support for the museum. The museum's mission is to document the historical, social, environmental and scientific aspects of Rocky Flats and to educate the public about the weapons plant and the Cold War. The museum is working to preserve key artifacts and oral histories from workers and others so that educational programs can be developed for the public and students at a site on the former weapons plant. A group of former workers, interested citizens, university professors, peace activists and government representatives formed the board of directors for the museum. Federal legislation designating the former plant site as a National Wildlife Refuge also provided for a feasibility study for the museum. The completed study showed that a museum could attract more than 100,000 visitors a year. The museum's board is seeking federal funding for the museum.
