A RESOLUTION

IN SUPPORT OF CULTURE & THE ARTS IN THE LAKEWOOD COMMUNITY AND SUPPORTING THE ROLE OF THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD'S HERITAGE, CULTURE & THE ARTS COMMISSION

WHEREAS, the cultural and fine arts are a vital part of the community, a hallmark of civilization, and an expression of our humanity; and

WHEREAS, through their unique ability to uplift and inspire, to provoke critical thought and discussion, and to capture and present timeless truths, the arts are an immeasurable catalyst to the well-developed individual and the fully functioning community; and

WHEREAS, the cultural and fine arts are an important component in the economic health of the region and Lakewood community, serving to attract businesses and create jobs, and generating more than $1.3 billion in economic activity in 2003 in the Denver metro area, according to the 2004 Study of Metro Denver Culture, and

WHEREAS, the same study indicates arts and culture paid $86 million in wages in the metro area in 2003, with more than 11 million people attending cultural activities in 2003, more than twice the number who attended professional sporting events; and

WHEREAS, Lakewood shares in that economic activity through arts and cultural events offered in various City venues including the Lakewood Cultural Center, along with participation and funding through the regional Scientific & Cultural Facilities District, and as a result of the dynamic efforts of the City's Heritage, Culture & the Arts Commission; and

WHEREAS, Lakewood businesses benefit from Lakewood cultural and arts facilities by increased sales and the ability to attract and retain employees due to a better quality of life offered in Lakewood, and

WHEREAS, members of the City's Heritage, Culture & the Arts Commission volunteer their time to develop and support a diverse array of cultural and fine arts programs, exhibits, cultural organizations, and culture and arts funding for broad community benefit and economic development.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Lakewood, Colorado, that:

1. Cultural and fine arts continue as an important facet of the Lakewood community both for sustaining and improving the quality of life of our residents as well as for economic benefit to Lakewood businesses and residents.

2. The work of the City of Lakewood Heritage, Culture & the Arts Commission is essential to the development of the cultural and fine arts in Lakewood.

3. Lakewood residents are encouraged to enjoy, participate and enrich themselves in the diverse variety of arts and culture available in our city.

INTRODUCED, READ AND ADOPTED by a vote of 10 for and 0 against at a regular meeting of the City Council on February 28, 2005, at 7 o'clock p.m. at the Lakewood Civic Center, 480 South Allison Parkway, Lakewood, Colorado.
