40TH ANNIVERSARY OF HEAD START
WHEREAS, in 1964 a panel of child development experts, under a commission from the federal government, created Project Head Start to help communities meet the needs of disadvantaged preschool children, launching the first eight-week summer program in 1965 to help break the cycle of poverty, providing preschool-aged children of low-income families with a comprehensive program to meet their emotional, social, health, nutritional, and psychological needs; and
WHEREAS, since 1965, Head Start has served over 17 million children and their families, including 131 children and their families currently served by the City of Lakewood Head Start Program; and
WHEREAS, Lakewood Head Start, since 1997, has positively affected the delivery of child development and child care services and the expansion of activities for young children throughout our community; and
WHEREAS, a cornerstone of Lakewood Head Start is parent involvement including classroom support, program planning, and decision-making by serving as elected members of the Policy Council; and
WHEREAS, Lakewood Head Start staff work closely with community agencies and other programs for young children with disabilities to ensure children with special needs obtain the care they need; and
WHEREAS, approximately 260 individuals volunteer and 30 community organizations provide a wide array of services to Lakewood Head Start, including donation of time, resources, and materials.
NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the City Council and the people of the City of Lakewood, I, Steve Burkholder, Mayor of the City of Lakewood, Colorado, by virtue of the authority vested in me, do hereby recognize October as
Head Start's 40th Anniversary
and gratefully acknowledge the program's contribution to youth and their families
in the Lakewood community.
