Proclamation - Breast Cancer Awareness Month & National Mammography Day

P R O C L A M A T I O N

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH & NATIONAL MAMMOGRAPHY DAY

WHEREAS, October 2005 is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and October 21, 2005 is National Mammography Day; and

WHEREAS, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, exceeded only by lung cancer; and

WHEREAS, more than 211,000 new cases of female breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2005, with more than 40,000 women dying from the disease in the United States this year; and

WHEREAS, almost 1,700 new cases of male breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2005, with nearly 500 men dying from the disease; and

WHEREAS, mammography is recognized as the single most effective method of detecting breast cancer long before it can be seen or felt; and

WHEREAS, early detection and prompt treatment can significantly reduce suffering and death caused by the disease.

NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the City Council and the people of Lakewood, I, Steve Burkholder, Mayor of the City of Lakewood, Colorado, by virtue of the authority vested in me, do hereby proclaim October 2005 as

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH in Lakewood, with October 21 as MAMMOGRAPHY DAY
and urge women and men in Lakewood to be aware of the risks and early warning signs of breast cancer and to learn more from their doctors about early detection of breast cancer.
