Mr. Curt Williams
945 Allison Street
Lakewood, Colorado 80215
Dear Mr. Williams:
It is my distinct pleasure to recognize the courage and selfless actions you demonstrated to assist a man and his wife on the evening of May 18, 2005.
At around 6:30 p.m., the couple was on South Pierce Street buying gas. Two men in their late 30s riding bicycles began shouting racial slurs and threatening the couple by waiving a knife within a few feet of them. Frightened, the pair began backing away in an attempt to avoid the life-threatening danger.
Another witness, Ms. Jessica Newell, saw the confrontation as she drove into the gas station. She quickly assessed the danger, told the aggressors to leave, and that she was calling the police. One suspect then turned and threatened her. Undaunted, she chose to relay valuable information to the dispatcher on her cell phone.
Mr. Williams, you were working nearby, heard screaming and witnessed the woman crying as a result of the imminent danger faced by the couple. You immediately ran to the gas station shouting at the attackers to leave. You were met with a barrage of verbal and physical threats yourself as the suspect waived his knife at you. Refusing to be intimidated, you stood your ground until the police arrived.
The suspects eventually fled from the gas station and were soon arrested with the knives still in their pockets. Without your selfless actions and willingness to stand by these people, an innocent couple might have been seriously injured or worse, and two blatant criminals might have avoided apprehension.
Therefore, it is my distinct pleasure to award you, Mr. Curt Williams, with the Citizen Citation for Meritorious Service for acts by a private citizen involving uncommon risk while assisting members of the Lakewood Police Department. Thank you for your willingness to get involved and to offer your much needed support and cooperation.
Sincerely,
Ronald R. Burns, Chief of Police
