Dear Ms. Newell:

It is my distinct pleasure to recognize the courage and selfless actions you demonstrated to assist a man and his wife on the evening of May 18, 2005.

At around 6:30 p.m., the couple was on South Pierce Street buying gas. Two men in their late 30s riding bicycles began shouting racial slurs and threatening the couple by waiving a knife within a few feet of them. Frightened, the pair began backing away in an attempt to avoid the life-threatening danger.

Ms. Newell, you saw the confrontation as you drove into the gas station. Quickly assessing the danger, you told the aggressors to leave and that you were calling the police. One of the suspects then turned toward you, called you several demeaning names, and began threatening you. Refusing to be intimidated, you did not back down, but rather relayed valuable information to the dispatcher on your cell phone.

Another citizen, Mr. Curt Williams, was working nearby, heard screaming and saw the imminent danger to the couple. He immediately ran to the gas station shouting at the attackers to leave. Mr. Williams was met with a barrage of threats, but he also stood his ground until the police arrived.

The suspects eventually fled from the gas station and were soon arrested with the knives still in their pockets. Without your selfless actions and willingness to stand by these people, an innocent couple might have been seriously injured or worse, and two blatant criminals might have avoided apprehension.

Therefore, it is my distinct pleasure to award you, Ms. Jessica Newell, with the Citizen Citation for Meritorious Service for acts by a private citizen involving uncommon risk while assisting members of the Lakewood Police Department. Thank you for your willingness to get involved and to offer your much needed support and cooperation.

Sincerely,
Ronald R. Burns, Chief of Police
